While you’re fighting tangles and attempting to tame the frizz, regular brushing and using a billion different serums doesn’t always seem to make the trick. Having smooth hair is only a dream. Smooth hair without tangles or frizz is not impossible to achieve though.
There are two ways you can achieve smooth hair – the natural way, where you use certain ingredients, tips and tricks to encourage smoothness, and the chemical way. Although natural smoothing is temporary, it has more positive effect on your hair. Chemical smoothing is permanent, and lasts between four to eight months. Yet, it appears to have a damaging effect on your hair.
While these methods are temporary, natural smoothing will probably improve your hair’s health in the long run, making it smooth and shiny.
Tips For Smooth Hair
1. Rinse With Cold Water
Using cold water to rinse your hair as it covers your hair shaft’s upper layer, making it shiny and smooth. While it is completely normal to develop an aversion to cold water during winter, using warm or hot water will lift your cuticles and cause your hair to frizz.
If you can’t stand the idea of using cold water to shower, use the lean-and-wash method to wash your hair. Hold a bucket of cold water next to you and use a jug, bend forward and start pouring your hair into the water. Shampoo, wash and rinse your hair this way.
2. Aloe Vera Gel
You’d be shocked that aloe vera is a powerhouse with 75 recognized nutrients. It contains enzymes which cause healthy hair growth and make it soft and smooth. Aloe vera gel has the same chemical composition as keratin— the substance that makes up a large majority of the build-up of our hair. Thus the gel penetrates the hair shafts easily and provides the moisturization required.
3. Careful Combing
On the brushing, go easy. Too much of combing or brushing will cause friction, making your hair frizzy. Restrict combing to a bare minimum, and never do it when it’s wet. Wet hair is more likely to break. A decent combing regimen includes untangling the hair in front of a shower with a large dented wooden comb, then combing it to shape once or twice a day, and getting rid of tangles.
4. Blow Drying Techniques
Try getting your hair dry naturally. But if you’re in a hurry, you can blow your hair dry. Make it a point however to use a good quality big-toothed round brush with a ceramic base. Use your blow dryer’s cool settings, as this leads to less damage. Keep the blow dryer from your hair 15 centimeters away and constantly move it so it won’t blow too long at one part of hair.
5. Trimming Is Important
If you want to maintain healthy and smooth hair, trimming is the most important thing to do. It helps remove split ends and damage that would otherwise stretch the hair shaft, resulting in dryness and frizz. Trim your hair every 4 to 6 weeks.
Home Remedies For Smooth Hair
6. Mayonnaise Mask
Treat your hair once a week by giving it a deep conditioning treatment. Mayonnaise is a rich source of L-cysteine, which is also present in eggs as an amino acid and a potent antioxidant. Regular use of this hair pack promotes healthy hair growth.
You Will Need:
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 2 teaspoons mashed avocado
Mix the mayonnaise and avocado until the mixture becomes fluffy. Apply the mixture from the roots over the length of your hair. Pull your hair to the crown once you’ve applied the paste, and cover your head with a shower cap. Leave the product on for an hour, then rinse it off.
7. Banana Pack
Banana is high in carbohydrates, vitamins, potassium and natural oils. It is a well-known antioxidant which helps to counter free radicals. Using banana in a hairpack can nourish and moisturize your hair. It eliminates frizz and is frequently used to soothe an irritated scalp.
You Will Need:
- 1 ripe banana
- 2 teaspoons yogurt
Mash a ripe banana, and add two yogurt teaspoons to it. Blend it to get a smooth paste, so that there are no banana chunks left. Apply this all over the hair, from the tips to the crown. After 45 minutes rinse off with a shampoo.
8. Vinegar Rinse
Apple cider vinegar has a long history of being used as a natural hair rinse. Our hair has a pH of 5.5 but we use highly alkaline shampoos and conditioners. Apple cider vinegar helps maintain our scalp’s pH balance while cleaning up the build-up that could have been formed by excessive use of products.
You Will Need:
- 1/4 cup vinegar
- 1 cup water
Dilute 1⁄4 vinegar with one cup of water. Since washing your hair, use this as the final rinse for your hair, and keep it on.
