6 Sprained Ankle Remedies – How To Relieve Pain And Recover Faster!

You can get what is called a sprained ankle when you happen to twist or turn your ankle in an uncomfortable and unwanted manner. Ok, what’s the wrong way to move your ankle? You need to learn what the ligaments are and how they protect the ankles. Ligaments are the strong muscle bands that help keep the ankle bones intact.

In your joints, ligaments are present to protect them. These also avoid unnecessary joint rotation, which is why you can not fully rotate the joints. Furthermore, the ligaments are forced to move outside their usual range of motion when you attempt to do this, knowingly or unknowingly, and this is when they get hurt, leading to a sprained ankle.

In most cases, self-care can take care of your damaged ligaments with certain home remedies for sprained ankle. Occasionally, though, the damage to your ankle ligaments can be serious and you may need to see your doctor know how badly your ankle has been sprained. There are some home remedies for the non-serious sprains.

Home Remedies For Sprained Ankle

1. Rest

Give your ankle rest by preventing any pain, swelling, etc. That doesn’t mean you’ve got to lie on the bed. Only that you need to stop using the injured area’s muscles and tissues as much as you can. For instance, if you normally walk long distances, avoid such a walk. Do not use the injured leg while you are exercising. Cycle, for example, with the other leg. Do hand exercises while sitting. The idea is to move the body around, but not to move the sprained ankle.

2. Ice

When you apply ice right after your ankle has been injured, there’s a chance you won’t get any swelling. To minimize pain and swelling, it is best to apply ice or a cold compress every 1-2 hours for 10-20 minutes. For the first 24-48 hours, you have to repeat this ice treatment. Ice may be the most effective way to reduce inflammation and pain due to increased blood flow or blood loss.

Do not directly apply ice to your skin though. Wrap the ice in a sheet or towel at all times. If your sprained ankle area turns white, stop using any remedies, including ice, and visit your doctor. Also, if you have some vascular disease, diabetes or a decreased sensation, consult your doctor before treating yourself with ice.

3. Compression

With an elastic bandage, covering the affected area helps to reduce swelling. Nevertheless, wrapping a bandage too tightly can have an adverse effect by hindering the proper circulation of the blood. Unless tightly tied intentionally, elastic bandages can give you accurate compression without blocking circulation. However, sometimes your pain may increase after the injured area has been wrapped. If this happens, loosen some more of the bandage or remove it completely. And visit your doctor.

4. Elevation

Elevating your leg with a sprayed ankle decreases swelling by increasing blood venous return to your systemic circulation that helps to prevent fluid accumulation. Hold your leg up when you sit or lie down. Using pillows and cushions as you lie down to raise your leg and hold it above your heart’s level.

5. Turmeric

Turmeric has been used for its anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and antiseptic properties since ancient times to relieve swelling and pain. It was a popular ayurvedic treatment for joint and joint pain inflammation. Curcumin is the most essential compound in turmeric. Evidence has shown that curcumin reduces nitric oxide and is a pro-inflammatory agent that inhibits COX-2. Using turmeric can provide relief from a sprained ankle’s related discomforts.

To obtain a smooth paste, add water to the turmeric. Warm up this paste. Apply this, ideally at night, to your sprained ankle. Wrap over this turmeric poultice a sheet or an elastic bandage. Let it sit for at least 1-2 hours if you don’t apply at night. Wash with warm water.

6. Rosemary

While having antioxidants, rosemary herb has excellent anti-inflammatory properties which can also help you get rid of the sprained ankle. If the body tissue is injured, such as when the ankle is sprained, the white blood cells create chemicals to get rid of the damage and the blood flow to the damaged site is increased. Many fluids rush to the affected area as well. It leads to swelling and redness. This stream of blood and fluid is found in Rosemary as more harm than good. A rosemary leaf tincture can be added topically to your sprayed ankle.

Chop enough leaves of rosemary to nearly fill your jar. Place the leaves of the chopped rosemary in the pot. Load it with alcohol from the plant. Cover with the lid and put for 4-6 weeks in a dark cupboard. Between 4-6 weeks, using cheesecloth to strain the herbs. Place the tincture of this rosemary in dark bottles. Apply as appropriate to your sprains or strains.
